UAPB drops fourth consecutive game

Lenard Tillery didn't become the Southwestern Athletic Conference's all-time rushing leader Saturday night, but his two early scores put Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a hole from which the Golden Lions could not recover.

UAPB never could recover in its fourth consecutive loss, this time a 49-17 setback at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

Tillery twice scored on 6-yard runs in the first quarter to put Southern (4-2, 4-0 SWAC) up 14-0, and John West's 6-yard run capped a 21-point first quarter.

Austin Howard then threw three second-half touchdown passes to lead the Jaguars' rout of the Golden Lions (1-6, 1-4).

Tillery, who entered the game needing 245 yards to become the SWAC's all-time leading rusher, had 135 yards rushing against UAPB. Howard completed 22 of 28 passes for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Jaguars, the top scoring offense in the SWAC, had 515 yards of offense.

UAPB was held to 332 yards of offense.

The Golden Lions tried to stay close early, when receiver Cody Swain connected with Willie Young for a 62-yard touchdown pass, and Jamie Gillan added a 25-yard field goal to cut Southern's lead to 21-10 at halftime.

But UAPB didn't manage another score until there was 8:32 left in the game and LeEarl Patterson scored on a 2-yard run. By that time, the Golden Lions trailed 42-17.

Howard threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Willie Quinn and 14 yards to Dontrelle Brown in the third quarter, then found Quinn again in the fourth from 27 yards. Deonte Shorts' 4-yard run capped the scoring for the Jagaurs.

Brandon Duncan completed 20 of 29 passes for 181 yards, but he did not throw a touchdown pass and had 1 interception.

Terry Montgomery led UAPB with 35 yards rushing, and the Golden Lions were held to 89 yards rushing as a team.

It was UAPB's third consecutive game in which it lost by 20 or more points, and its fourth in a row in which it lost by 12 or more.
