• The case of Mrs. Mattie B. Marshall against the Rock Island railroad for $30,300 damages occupied yesterday's session of the United States District Court. The case will be continued today. Mrs. Marshall, in her complaint, alleges that about 60 acres of her land was washed away by the Arkansas river on account of a dike built by the Rock Island railroad on the Argenta side of the bridge here.

TEXARKANA -- Winthrop Rockefeller charged at a rally here Monday night that his Democratic opponent's campaign managers were "frantically calling all over Arkansas promising state jobs in exchange for campaign assistance." Curt Copeland, who Rockefeller said lives in Monroe, La., and cannot even vote in Arkansas, is "down there at Johnson headquarters putting out patronage like crazy," he said. Rockefeller lashed out at Jim Johnson more forcefully in his Texarkana speech than at any previous time.

CONWAY -- The FBI is investigating racist letters threatening the lives of two University of Central Arkansas professors and their families, the FBI confirmed Thursday. Bryan W. Massey, a professor of art, and Dr. Theman R. Taylor, a professor of history, said they received anonymous letters Saturday. Massey said he believes the writers targeted him and Taylor because they are black and they have made comments critical of UCA's administration and working conditions.

• Just follow the signs, Razorback fans, and things should go smoothly. So says the War Memorial Stadium Commission, which expects more than 50,000 football fans to flood the midtown Little Rock stadium Saturday for the sold-out University of Arkansas game against the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Stadium officials have changed traffic patterns for fans to follow, they said Tuesday, hoping to ease the headaches of games past. "Essentially, we've had anarchy out here for 20 years," Stadium Commission Chairman Gary Smith said after a news conference. "We're trying to get a little more organized." More than 2,000 parking spaces usually available for the game, however, won't be available because of construction in the area. And there won't be any major changes in tailgating policies that some fans have called too restrictive.
