House haunted? Some ways to tell

Could be the source of that rapping sound is just a few air bubbles in a water pipe -- but what if it's not? What if it really is a ghost? How is a person supposed to tell?

Some of the symptoms are well-known to viewers of TV's many paranormal series, including Haunted Case Files, Ghost Hunters and Kindred Spirits.

Inexplicable cold spots, orbs of light and disembodied voices indicate spooks in the works -- as well as these other signs that a place is haunted:

• A creepy past. Haunted houses tend to have some sort of tragic or violent history. Or the house might be set on cursed ground, as in the movie Poltergeist (1982): built atop a cemetery.

• Hidden passageways. A door that nobody knew was there is seldom a happy find. Chances are, it leads to creaky stairs that spiral endlessly down, or to some gruesome secret as in author Richard Matheson's classic, Hell House.

• Anything that would cause the dog of the house to say, "Scooby Doobie Doo!"
