Arkansas Index falls 0.78, ends at 342.86

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, fell 0.78 to 342.86 Tuesday.

"The major averages closed modestly higher as investors reacted to economic-data releases and increased merger and acquisition activity," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

Shares of Tyson Foods and Communications Sales & Leasing hit 52-week highs.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
