State Board of Education rejects applications for 2 open-enrollment charter schools

The state Board of Education on Thursday morning, after panel recommendations, rejected applications for two open-enrollment charter schools in Arkansas.

In August, the Charter Authorizing Panel denied the requests, which would have established Lockesburg STEM Academy and Paron Charter School.

Board members also tabled discussion on two action agenda items until later in the day, both related to private school eligibility for the Succeed Scholarship Program for students with disabilities.

One seeks to recognize two private organizations — American Montessori Society and AdvanceED — as accrediting associations for the purposes of eligibility, while the other proposes mandates for nationally recognized standardized testing for private schools seeking entry into the program.

Later in the day, the board is set to consider a number of waiver requests for open-enrollment charter schools across the state.
