Arkansan killed in drive-by shooting after taking daughter to Wal-Mart, police say

A 66-year-old man was fatally shot overnight in Conway after taking his daughter to a local Wal-Mart to buy a tire inflator, according to police.

In a statement, Conway police spokesman LaTresha Woodruff said Robert Lee Givens was shot as he drove around 12:30 a.m. Friday along Donaghey Avenue near Independence Street.

Givens’ daughter told police that after they left Wal-Mart, a tan-colored SUV drove up behind them at Hairston Street and flashed its lights.

At that point, his daughter said Givens pulled over and spoke with the SUV’s driver. She said she overheard the driver tell her father that he had mistaken Givens for someone else.

Givens later drove off but was followed by the SUV’s driver, who pulled up beside Givens and his daughter and fired a shot that fatally struck Givens, according to police.

The vehicle Givens was driving then crashed and came to a rest in the yard of a house on Donaghey and Johnston avenues.

The shooter, described as a young black man, fled the scene with a passenger, described as a white woman, Givens' daughter told authorities.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting, being investigated as a homicide, is asked to call the Conway Police Department at (501) 450-6120.
