Track, soccer facility on UAPB’s wish list

Track, field and soccer athletes at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff hope to get an on-campus home.

The university has listed a track and field and soccer complex among its top priorities in the campus’s master plan, said Athletic Director Lonza Hardy. The campus is planning a 2,000-seat complex that will include locker rooms, a press box, restrooms, a concession stand, a sports medicine treatment area, an equipment storage room and ticket booths, he told the University of Arkansas System board of trustees at a two-day meeting that ended Thursday.

The complex would be the area’s only collegiate track and soccer facility, he said. UAPB has a Division I track and field team that practices at local high schools and has meets on the road, he said.

UAPB estimated the complex would cost $7.5 million. University Chancellor Laurence Alexander said the university is “in the development phase” and is beginning fundraising for the complex.
