Woman walking on shoulder of Arkansas highway fatally struck by vehicle

An Arkansas woman who police say was walking along the shoulder of a state highway was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday night.

It happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Arkansas 7 in Bismarck.

Layla S. Johnson, 37, of Malvern was walking on the shoulder when a 2004 Mazda traveling south on the highway hit her, according to an Arkansas State Police report. Johnson died at the scene.

The report didn't name the driver or indicate what may have caused the vehicle to hit Johnson. A state police spokesman said the investigation into the crash was ongoing.

Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

The death was the 367th on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
