Zippers, Too Short are blasts from the past

The Squirrel Nut Zippers will perform from 10:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Saturday at the Four Quarter Bar in North Little Rock. Admission is $35.

Founded in 1993 in Carrboro, N.C., the band is marking the 20th anniversary of the release of its second album, Hot, which reached platinum status by selling more than a million copies. Guitarist and singer Jimbo Mathus went on to a prolific solo career. He and percussionist Chris Phillips, both founding members, are back with new members in the revived Squirrel Nut Zippers.

Ingrid Lucia of The Flying Neutrinos is in the current lineup.

Too Short will perform at 11 p.m. Friday at the Rev Room in Little Rock. Admission ranges from $30 to $55.

Born Todd Anthony Shaw in 1966, Too Short (a reported 5 feet 7 inches tall) grew up in Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., and worked with Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. in the mid-1980s, as he became a prominent rapper. He has released 21 studio albums and three collaborations, and released his latest, Shorty the Pimp, on April 22.

Govinda will perform at 8:15 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10 (with a $3 surcharge for minors).

Govinda is an actor from Mumbai, India, known for his dancing skills and work in Hindi films. He was also a member of the Indian Parliament from 2004 to 2009.

A "Goodbye Summer" party will feature Impress & Lions of the Rock, Darrill "Harp" Edwards and DJ Nick Hud at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10.

Singer-songwriter Jon Brooks will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the Little Rock Folk Club at the Hibernia Irish Tavern in Little Rock.

Brooks is a Canadian who released his first album, No Mean City, in 2006. The album combined characters with their surrounding architecture in a salute to the past and present of Toronto. His follow-up release a year later, Ours and the Shepherds, was a musical collection of Canadian war stories.

He also released Moth Nor Rust in 2009, Delicate Cages in 2012 and The Smiling and Beautiful Countryside (a collection of murder ballads) in 2014.

In Texas, he won the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 2010.

Milton Patton will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Jimmy Doyle's Country Club in North Little Rock. Admission is $10.

Patton, a native of Forrest City, made it to the final rounds of the NBC show, America's Got Talent, in 2013. Though he grew up listening to blues and R&B music, he ultimately became a country singer.

The annual citywide festival, Beatles at the Ridge, will be held Friday and Saturday in downtown Walnut Ridge. Admission is free.

Performers on Friday will include Sonny Burgess & The Legendary Pacers and Deadwood Groove. Saturday performers are Liverpool Legends, The Brandon Cunning Band, Jeffrey & The Pacemakers, Arkansas Brothers and Lauren Richmond.

The event marks the 1964 visit by The Beatles to the northeast Arkansas town's airport, where the Fab Four switched planes on their way to a brief vacation at a Missouri dude ranch. In 2011, Walnut Ridge's community of Beatles fans created the annual festival.
