Man who drove into pond named

A University of Arkansas at Little Rock official identified the man who died after driving off the road and into a pond Tuesday in west Little Rock as Eduardo Alvarez.

Alvarez was a freshman at UALR, said Allen Hicks, a spokesman for the university.

He lost control of his car Tuesday night while driving south on Rahling Road before hitting several trees and landing in the pond. Arkansas State Police and the Pulaski County coroner's office had originally identified the driver Wednesday as a 28-year-old Little Rock man, but authorities later said that the name was incorrect.

Police responded to a report of a car submerged in the pond just east of the 1800 block of Rahling Road about 5:30 p.m., said officer Richard Hilgeman, a spokesman for Little Rock police. Alvarez was pulled out of the car and taken to Baptist Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Hicks said there will be a campus memorial service for Alvarez at 6 p.m. today in Room D of the Donaghey Student Center.
