UAPB wins in 3 OTs; scores 16 to tie in 4th

LORMAN, Miss. -- Brandon Duncan had a career-high 505 yards passing with four TD passes on Thursday night and UAPB rallied from a 16-point, fourth-quarter deficit and upset two-time defending conference champion Alcorn State 45-43 in three overtimes at Spinks-Casem Stadium.

The Golden Lions (1-2, 1-0 Southwest Athletic Conference), coming off an embarrassing home loss to Division II Panhandle State (Okla.) last Saturday, scored two touchdowns and two 2-point conversions in the final 5:55 of regulation to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the first overtime, with both drives ending in lost fumbles, but they traded touchdowns in the second overtime -- UAPB scored on Terry Montgomery's 10-yard run and Alcorn State scored on Noah Johnson's 2-yard run. Both extra-point attempts were good.

UAPB won in the third overtime after Alcorn State scored on Johnson's third touchdown run. but the Braves misfired on their two-point conversion attempt to take a 43-37 lead.

UAPB took advantage when Duncan hit Willie Young for a 25-yard score on UAPB's first play. Duncan found John Hawkins on an underneath route for the winning two-point conversion.

Young finished with 13 catches for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Alcorn State's Johnson threw for 353 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for 62 yards and another 3 scores.

UAPB led 14-2 after one quarter, but Alcorn State scored the next 28 points and led 30-14 with 12:50 to play in regulation after Johnson's 6-yard run and Corey McCullough extra point.

Duncan completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to John Hawkins at the 5:55 mark and Duncan's two-point conversion pass to Patrick Rowland made it 30-22.

UAPB started its game-tying drive with 2:15 to play after holding Alcorn State and taking over at its 36.

The Golden Lions went 64 yards in seven plays, ending with Dante McDonald's 11-yard touchdown run. Duncan threw to Cody Swain for the two-point conversion and the game was tied 30-30 with 52 seconds to play.

Alcorn drove the UAPB 31 in the final minute, but McCullough's 47-yard attempt to win it fell short.
