Arkansas man charged with first-degree murder in fatal nightclub shooting

A Texarkana man was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service and charged with first-degree murder Wednesday, according to the Texarkana Police Department.

LaJason Coakley, 23, is accused of shooting and killing 25-year-old Montel Waller, police said in a news release.

Officers responded to a disturbance at the Paradise Club around 1 a.m. Aug. 20 and found Waller suffering from a single gunshot wound, police said.

Waller was transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center while police investigated the shooting, according to the release. Officers identified Coakley as the shooter and issued a felony warrant on a first-degree battery chrage for his arrest, police said.

Waller later died from his injuries Sept. 12, at which time the original charge was upgraded to first-degree murder.

No information regarding a court date could be given at this time, police said.
