Shot woman dies; husband charged

A Russellville man was being held in the Pope County jail Friday in the killing of his wife, according to police.

Jeff Ross, 48, was being held in lieu of a $750,000 bond on a charge of first-degree murder. The bond amount was set during a probable cause hearing Friday by Russellville District Judge Don Bourne.

Ross also was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The name of the woman was not released Friday, police spokesman Drew Latch said, because police still were notifying next of kin.

Russellville police responded at 3:15 p.m. Thursday to a call of a shooting at the Ross residence in the 800 block of West Third Street. The woman was found on the premises with a gunshot wound, and Ross was located there shortly thereafter, according to reports. Latch wouldn't say Friday where on the premises the shooting occurred or what prompted the shooting.

Pope County Emergency Medical Services transported the woman, in critical condition, to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville, according to a Police Department news release. She died late Thursday, Latch said.
