Arkansas to offer enhanced security driver's licenses

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas officials say the state is set to begin offering new enhanced driver's licenses and identification cards next week in order to comply with new federal standards.

The state Department of Finance and Administration said Monday it will begin offering the enhanced licenses and IDs at 25 revenue offices statewide beginning Oct. 3. The new licenses are being issued in response to the federal REAL ID Act, which imposes stricter guidelines for some state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards.

Under federal rules, individuals wishing to board aircraft for commercial passenger flights need to present an enhanced ID by October 2020. Similar rules will restrict access to federal buildings and installations. The currently issued standard drivers' licenses and ID cards will still be available after October.
