Weekend crashes on state roads kill 5

 2 drivers injured, their passengers die

Crashes on Arkansas roads killed five people over the weekend, according to Arkansas State Police.

Two women died in a crash in Hempstead County on Saturday at about 7:40 a.m., according to a police report.

Latonya Cheatham, 37, of Texarkana crossed the center line on Arkansas 73 in a Volkswagen Jetta and struck a Nissan Altima in the oncoming lane, the report said.

The collision killed Jewellene Trotter, 75, of Washington and Pearlean Cheatham of Fulton. Trotter was a passenger in the Altima; Pearlean Cheatham was a passenger in the Jetta, the report said.

Latonya Cheatham and Latasha Trotter, 40, of Texarkana, who was driving the Altima, were both injured and taken to the hospital, police said.

A second crash at about 11:55 a.m. Saturday in Sebastian County killed the driver of an all-terrain vehicle and injured a dirt-bike rider, according to a police report.

The two off-road vehicles collided while driving south on East Greenwood Drive. Timothy Peterson, 49, of Waldron struck Robert Thornburg, 46, of Hackett from behind with a Yamaha ATV, the report stated.

Peterson died after being thrown off the ATV, and Thornburg was injured after being knocked from his Honda dirt bike, police said.

A third accident killed a Pine Bluff man on Saturday at about 4:26 p.m. on Interstate 530 in Jefferson County, according to a police report.

Winfred Orrin Smith, 63, of Pine Bluff lost control of his Chevrolet Tahoe while driving north near mile marker 28 on Interstate 530, the report said.

Smith's SUV struck another northbound car, spun and overturned. Smith was killed after being thrown from his vehicle, the report said.

A Bay woman died at about 1 a.m. Sunday after leaving the road and overturning in her Honda Accord in Poinsett County, according to a police report.

Carla Elliot, 54, died after veering off Interstate 555 near Tulot Road, the report said.

Police said road conditions were clear and dry at the time of each accident.
