Hint: This trail meanders on the slope of mountains named after a 19th-century judge. He invested so wisely in real estate that by the 1920s he owned much of his county's heavily forested hills. But he started out as a teacher and a carpenter, according to the Centennial History of Little Rock by Dallas Tabor Herndon (1922).
Hint 2: The trail is named for a kind of shale once mined in the area.
Think you know? See the answer on Page 3E.
