NFL notes

RICHARDSON, Texas — Former Dallas and Carolina defensive end Greg Hardy, who remains unsigned after a tumultuous 2015 season revolving around his domestic violence case in North Carolina, has been arrested on a cocaine possession charge in Texas. Jail spokesman Tim Weed in the Dallas suburb of Richardson said Hardy was arrested early Monday and booked on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was released on $5,000 bond Monday afternoon.

Hardy’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined to comment.

The 28-year-old Hardy signed with Dallas as a free agent last year after Carolina decided not to bring him back as a result of the domestic case.

Hardy was suspended for the first four games last season over the domestic incident, and his production with the Cowboys dropped off considerably after photos of bruised ex-girlfriend Nicole Holder were posted by Deadspin.

After Hardy was convicted by a judge, prosecutors dropped his case during the appeal because Holder couldn’t be located to testify.

The NFL originally suspended Hardy for 10 games over the incident, but an arbitrator reduced the ban to four games.

COWBOYS

OL Collins put on IR

FRISCO, Texas — A person with knowledge of the injury says Dallas left guard La’el Collins will be placed on injured reserve with a possible return late in the season because of a right toe injury.

Collins left late in the first half of Sunday night’s 31-17 victory over Chicago with a toe injury. Speaking to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because details of the injury weren’t released, the person said Collins has a ligament injury on his right big toe.

Putting Collins on IR opens a roster spot for the Cowboys while giving Collins a chance to return to practice in six weeks and play in a game after eight weeks.

Dallas played the second half against the Bears without the starting left side of its line. Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith was inactive with a back injury. But Collins’ replacement is former starter Ron Leary, who lost his job to Collins last season.

Receiver Dez Bryant sprained his right knee on his first catch early against the Bears but returned and caught a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Coach Jason Garrett said there was no update on Bryant’s status.

REDSKINS

DB Hall done for year

WASHINGTON — If Washington’s DeAngelo Hall’s season-ending injury might lead others to suspect the playmaking defensive back’s 13-year NFL career is over, he was adamant Monday that won’t be the case.

“I’ll be back,” Hall tweeted, adding: “you can bet your life on that!!!!!!!” Hall will miss the rest of this season with a torn ligament in his right knee, the third consecutive year the veteran will miss time with an injury. Redskins Coach Jay Gruden said Monday that Hall needed surgery on his ACL.

“It’s pretty significant,” Gruden said. “From a leadership standpoint, ‘D-Hall’ has done a lot for this organization, a lot for this team. He’s going to be missed.” Hall, who turns 33 in November, was hurt in the first half of Washington’s 29-27 victory at the NFC East rival New York Giants on Sunday.

He has spent the past nine seasons with the Redskins. After entering the league as a cornerback and taken with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2004 draft by Atlanta, Hall switched to safety last season.

Hall missed five games in 2015, and the season before, he was out 13 games, sidelined by a torn Achilles tendon.

“He’s got to really take a look at it and see where he is once he does the rehab and if he wants to try it again,” Gruden said. “I haven’t talked to him about that, his future, yet. We just want him to get well first.”

Will Blackmon, a cornerback until this season, will start at safety in Hall’s place, Gruden said.

SEAHAWKS

QB Wilson sprains MCL

RENTON, Wash. — Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson has a sprained MCL in his left knee.

Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll said during his weekly radio show on KIROAM on Monday morning that Wilson “feels great” and that his recovery is already going “exceedingly well.”

Wilson underwent an MRI on Sunday night that confirmed the ligament sprain and received treatment all night, Carroll said.

Carroll acknowledged there is a consideration of sitting Wilson this week at the New York Jets with the Seahawks bye coming in Week 5, but also said it’s difficult trying to keep Wilson off the field.

Wilson was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s 37-18 victory over San Francisco when he was pulled down awkwardly while being sacked by Eli Harold.

JETS

TE Seferin-Jenkins added

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are giving Austin Seferian-Jenkins a chance to redeem himself off the field and get his NFL career back on track.

The talented but troubled tight end was claimed off waivers Monday from Tampa Bay, which cut him last week after he was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

Seferian-Jenkins, in his third NFL season, was a second-round draft pick out of Washington in 2014. He had 3 catches for 44 yards and 1 touchdown in 2 games this season, and has 45 career receptions for 603 yards and 7 TDs. To make room on the active roster, the Jets waived linebacker Julian Stanford. The Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release last Friday that Seferian-Jenkins was driving between 75 and 80 mph on Interstate 275 when his vehicle cut in front of a trooper’s cruiser and weaved back and forth. Sgt. Steve Gaskins said Seferian-Jenkins was charged with DUI and violation of an ignition interlock device restriction from an arrest in Washington in 2013.

Seferian-Jenkins refused a breath test at the Hillsborough County Jail and was released by the Buccaneers later that day.

RAIDERS

Pro Bowl FB released

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Oakland released Pro Bowl fullback Marcel Reece after his four-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs was completed.

Reece sat out the final game of 2015 and the first three games this season because of the suspension. He was eligible to be added back to the 53-man roster Monday, but the Raiders cut him instead with Jamize Olawale having filled the role of starting fullback.

Reece was selected to his fourth Pro Bowl last season before the suspension came down. In eight seasons, he had 205 receptions for 2,015 yards with 12 touchdowns. He also ran for 844 yards on 183 carries with 3 touchdowns.

CHARGERS

LB Te’o out for season

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Coach Mike McCoy said linebacker Manti Te’o will miss the rest of the season with a torn left Achilles tendon.

Te’o, a fourth-year linebacker from Notre Dame, was hurt in Sunday’s 26-22 loss at Indianapolis.

The Chargers (1-2) have lost a bigname player for the season in each of their three games. Wide receiver Keenan Allen tore his right ACL in the season-opening loss at Kansas City and running back Danny Woodhead suffered the same injury in a home victory against Jacksonville.

“It’s a shame,” McCoy said. “It’s another one of those guys you feel for, the way he’s worked, what he’s done, what he means to our organization.”

CARDINALS

Injuries piling up

TEMPE, Ariz. — Punter Drew Butler sprained his ankle during Arizona’s 33-18 loss at Buffalo on Sunday.

Coach Bruce Arians said the Cardinals could opt to keep Butler active and use him only as a holder. The team may have to look for another punter before Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

“We’ll search it all out [today], look at all our options,” Arians said Monday. Butler’s wasn’t the only Cardinal ailing. Wide receiver Michael Floyd came out of Sunday’s game with a headache on Monday morning and is in the concussion protocol.

Tight end Troy Niklas had one catch for no gain on Sunday and injured a wrist. Arians said the injury may be severe.

The Cardinals could also be working out long snappers today. Rookie Kam Canaday has had two glaring errors on field goals this season. The second came Sunday when his high snap sailed over Butler’s hands and was picked up and returned for a Bills touchdown.

Canaday is also dealing with a rib injury, which Arians said has to be factored into any roster decision.
