Railroad tales

Michael Hibblen, author of Rock Island Railroad in Arkansas and a reporter and anchorman at radio station KUAR-FM, 89.1, will discuss his book at noon today in Sturgis Hall, Clinton School of Public Service, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. Jazz in the Park

The Funkanites kick off the four-concert Jazz in the Park series, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the History Pavilion in Little Rock's Riverfront Park, just west of the First Security Amphitheater (enter from Ottenheimer Drive off of President Clinton Avenue).

Admission is free; some seating is available in the natural stone amphitheater at the pavilion; otherwise, lawn chairs and blankets are welcome, but not coolers. Available for sale: Beer, wine, soft drinks and water, plus Jazz in the Park koozies (a portion of the proceeds benefits Art Porter Music Education Inc.'s scholarship fund). In case of rain, the concert will move to the River Market West Pavilion behind the Ottenheimer Market Hall, 400 President Clinton Ave.

WWI resources

Brian Robertson, manager of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies' Research Services Division, will showcase items from the center's World War I collection (including letters from soldiers overseas, battlefield and home front photographs, oral histories, newspapers and other documents) at the monthly Legacies & Lunch, noon Wednesday in Darragh Center, Central Arkansas Library System Main Library, 100 Rock St., Little Rock. Admission is free. Co-sponsor is the Arkansas Humanities Council. Attendees should provide their own sack lunch; the Butler Center will provide drinks and dessert. Tubas & euphoniums

Hendrix College faculty member Gretchen Renshaw will be the featured guest for the University of Central Arkansas' Tuba/Euphonium Spring Fling concert, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Recital Hall, Snow Fine Arts Center at UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway. The program will also feature Hendrix faculty members John Krebs, piano, and Steven James, trumpet, and UCA faculty member Gail Robertson, euphonium, plus the UCA Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble and the

UCA Euphonium Duodecet. The program will include an arrangement of Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 1; Devil's Waltz by Steven Verhelst; Short Meditation by Anthony Plog; and Renshaw's arrangement of Souvenir de Porto Rico by Louis Moreau Gottschalk.
