Wal-Mart ranks first in penetration index

Ninety-five percent of Americans spent money at Wal-Mart in 2016, according to the Checkout Penetration Index compiled by The NPD Group Inc.

The percentage placed Wal-Mart at the top of the index of retailers and restaurants. The company was followed by McDonald's (89 percent), Target (84 percent), Walgreens (77 percent), Dollar Tree (71 percent) and Subway (70 percent). Sam's Club, the warehouse division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., was 22nd on the list with 39 percent.

The Checkout Penetration Index is based on millions of receipts from consumers across retailers and restaurants. It counts both online and in-store receipts.

"Consumers' spending on experiences is overlapping with their purchases of products, making every item and visit so important to competing in today's rapidly changing marketplace," Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst of The NPD Group, said in a statement.
