BOWLING

ASU's season ends

The Arkansas State University women's team lost its elimination match to Sam Houston State 4-0 on Saturday at the Raising Cane's River Center in Baton Rouge and finished the NCAA Tournament tied for fifth place for the fourth consecutive season.

Arkansas State lost the first two games 224-179 and 192-147, but it was poised to take the third game before a late rally gave the Bearkats a 222-212 victory. The Red Wolves had a chance to win the fourth game, but Jordan Richard couldn't register a strike on the second roll of the 10th frame and ASU lost 191-182.

"We started slow today, but we bowled pretty well in the last two matches," Coach Justin Kostick said in a news release. "Even though we threw good shots, we just couldn't strike enough today."

The Red Wolves end the season with 86 victories, the third most in program history.

BASEBALL

UAM takes series from Arkansas Tech

Austin Brakebill went 3 for 3 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI, while Alex Smith went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello (25-13, 20-7 Great American Conference) to a 3-1 victory over Arkansas Tech University (26-16, 20-7 GAC) in Monticello.

Brakebill's RBI single in the second inning scored Smith to give the Boll Weevils a 1-0 lead. Zach Klockowski hit an RBI single up the middle to score Marcus Williams and tied the game at 1-1. UAM took the lead for good in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Nick Piraino and a sacrifice fly from Brian Ray.

Braden Chambers (6-2) had 7 strikeouts in a complete-game victory for the Boll Weevils, while Geoffrey Birkemeier (5-5) took the loss for the Wonder Boys after allowing 3 runs in 4 innings.

In other GAC baseball action Saturday, Mark Fontenot and Cortland McPherson both hit home runs and Kenneth Tabor pitched eight shutout innings as Southern Arkansas University (32-7, 25-2 GAC) beat Harding University (16-24, 11-16 GAC) 7-0 at Goodheart Field in Magnolia. Tabor (8-1) allowed 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 8 in the victory.

No. 22 Spartans drop Scots

Keegan Floyd went 3 for 4 with a double and Easton Moore was 2 for 2 with a run scored, but Lyon College (28-17, 17-7 American Midwest Conference) fell to No. 22 Missouri Baptist University 3-1 at the Spartans Fields in St. Louis.

Lyon's lone run came in the seventh inning when Kyle West's RBI base hit scored Moore. Michael Syrett (5-1) got the victory for Missouri Baptist (31-11, 22-5 American Midwest) after allowing 5 hits with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts over 6 innings. Blake Jameson (3-1) took the loss for Lyon after allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts in 61/3 innings.

Hendrix loses at home

Paul Giacomazzi went 4 for 6 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base, while Zac Lange was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored for Hendrix College (15-19, 9-9 Southern Athletic Association) in an 8-4 loss to Rhodes College (19-16, 11-7 SAA) on Saturday at Warrior Field in Conway.

Rhodes starter Nick Bosman (2-0) earned the victory after allowing 1 run on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts over 8 innings. Evan Ingram (2-2) took the loss for Hendrix, which got two doubles and two runs scored from Chris Winter.

SOFTBALL

Razorbacks fall to Aggies

For the second consecutive day, a late-inning rally fell short as the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville fell 3-2 to No. 5 Texas A&M at Bogle Park in Fayetteville on Saturday.

The Razorbacks (25-16, 4-13 SEC) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from A.J. Belans that scored Autumn Russell, who singled to start the inning. Arkansas left-hander Caroline Hedgcock carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Aggies (37-3, 11-2 SEC) led off the sixth with two singles. They had the bases loaded with no outs after a dropped fly ball, but Autumn Storms replaced Hedgcock in the circle and held Texas A&M to an unearned run that tied the game at 1-1.

The Aggies added two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead before the Razorbacks rallied in the bottom of the inning. Madison Yannetti hit a one-out double to center field, then scored on a two-base throwing error that cut the lead to 3-2. Pinch-hitter Parker Pocklington was hit by a pitch to continue the rally, but Texas A&M pitcher Samantha Show struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Show (14-2) allowed 4 hits with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts in a complete game for the Aggies, while Storms (11-11) took the loss after allowing 2 unearned runs on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts in 2 innings.

Gomness leads UCA to victory

Kayla Gomness (11-14) allowed 1 hit and 3 total base runners Saturday in a complete-game victory for the University of Central Arkansas (17-29, 7-11 Southland Conference) as the Sugar Bears defeated Lamar University (22-21, 12-6 Southland) 2-0 in Beaumont, Texas.

The Sugar Bears scored a run in the second inning when Kate Myers hit a one-out triple and scored on an RBI ground out by Krissy Fontillas. They took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when Briana Whisenhunt walked with one out, stole second and scored on Kaylyn Shepherd's RBI single up the middle. The Cardinals got runners on first and second in the seventh inning, thanks to a base hit and an error, but Gomness got a foul out in left field and a ground out to third base to end the game.

Whisenhunt was 2 for 3 with 2 walks, 2 stolen bases and 1 run scored for UCA, while Shepherd went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Harding sweeps Southern Arkansas

No. 3 Harding University (42-4, 32-2 Great American Conference) took a seven-game lead in the conference standings over No. 7 Southern Arkansas University (35-11, 25-9 GAC) after sweeping a doubleheader against the Lady Muleriders on Saturday, winning the first game 3-1 and the second game 1-0.

Peyton Mills hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning of the first game to give the Lady Bisons a 1-0 lead, but the Lady Muleriders tied the game in the top of the second on Rachel Miller's RBI single. Autumn Humes' RBI single in the third gave Harding the lead for good at 2-1, and Mills added another RBI double in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

Katie Carney led off the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game for Harding with a double down the right-field line. Carney scored on Courtney Derrick's RBI fielder's choice. Southern Arkansas had only one hit in the second game.

Hannah Johnson (20-2) earned the victory for Harding in the first game, allowing 1 earned run on 7 hits with 4 strikeouts in 6 innings. Humes, who got the save in the first game, earned her school-record 21st victory in the second game.

In other GAC softball action Saturday, the University of Arkansas at Monticello (30-14, 23-9 GAC) swept a doubleheader from Arkansas Tech University (29-17, 23-11 GAC), winning 4-1 and 3-2. Kendra Coleman got the victory in the first game after striking out eight in a complete game, while Kaylee Greeman earned a complete-game victory and had an RBI single in the second game. ... Ouachita Baptist University (17-29, 11-23 GAC) split Saturday's doubleheader with Northwestern Oklahoma State, losing the first game 5-2 and winning the second game 15-4. Macy Wilson went 3 for 6 on the day with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Sarah Johnson, Natalie Jackson and Macy Nantz all hit home runs in the second game.

Hendrix sweeps Sewanee

Hendrix College finished off a three-game sweep of Sewanee - The University of the South on Saturday by beating the Tigers 5-0 at Warrior Field in Conway.

Emily Stockalper (10-9) allowed 3 hits and struck out 4 to earn the victory for the Warriors (16-18, 8-10 Southern Athletic Association). Sydney Leibfritz (1-23) took the loss for Sewanee (1-32, 0-17 SAA) after allowing 5 runs on 10 hits with 1 walk. Karli Sewell, Bryanna Carlisle and Nikki Sanders all went 2 for 3 for Hendrix.
