Blue Jean Ball nets $11,000 to raise Autism Awareness

The only things blue were the decorations and the clothing at the Blue Tie Blue Jean Ball, Little Rock's annual Autism Awareness event, held April 13 in the lobby and ballroom of the historic Lafayette Building in downtown Little Rock.

Steered by Dawn Itzkowitz, the event was a benefit for the recently formed Arkansas Autism Foundation, with which Goodwill Industries of Arkansas is partnering while the foundation sets up its nonprofit status. Blue -- inspired by Autism Awareness Month and the Light It Up Blue campaign -- was the theme of the ball. Guests were encouraged to wear bluejeans and other blue clothing items.

Awaiting them were beer, wine, heavy hors d'oeuvres, music by Daniel Vasquez and a silent auction including puzzle-piece-shape artworks created by local artists and giving nods to the symbol for the Autism Awareness movement. The food even included cookies in shapes of puzzle pieces.

Itzkowitz shared brief remarks at the height of the event, thanking attendees, sponsors and the foundation board for making everything possible. Proceeds came to more than $11,000, she said.
