BASHING BEFORE SMASHING

Bolo Bash 'feeder' lives up to its name with house party

The biggest stars of the 2017 Baptist Health Bolo Bash -- the players and the sponsors -- gathered at the Valley Crest Court home of Dianna and Kevin Huchingson the evening of April 10 to mingle over a seemingly endless buffet of hors d'oeuvres and beverages.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Men's Pro Circuit event started with a Wild Card Tournament at Rebsamen Tennis Center on April 4 and culminated April 16 with tournament finals and lunch, also at Rebsamen. The event, orchestrated by the Baptist Health Foundation, is a feeder to the U.S. Open and tour-level competition for aspiring tennis players. The tournament, now in its 38th year, has hosted players from all over the world including Andre Agassi, Brad Gilbert, Andy Roddick and Kei Nishikori.

During the April 10 party at the Huchingsons' home, Tim Orellano presented the 2017 Ann Loomis Sportsmanship Award to Austen Huang of Sacramento, Calif. Ann Loomis served on the local USTA Men's Pro Circuit tournament committee for 27 years. The award in her name is given each year to a player from the tournament that "demonstrates dedication, sportsmanship and commitment to the game," Orellano said.

Proceeds for this year's Bolo Bash beneficiary are again directed in the area of nursing excellence. "Money raised will go to continuing education for our current nurses and scholarships for our nursing students," said spokesman Cara Wade.
