County tax office upgrading system

EL DORADO -- The Union County tax collector's office plans to upgrade its 30-year-old computer system, which officials say will make the lives of taxpayers and tax collector employees easier.

The tax collector's office will spend $84,000 -- or $12,000 per year for seven years -- upgrading machines and software.

The upgrade will allow the tax collector's office to scan checks and accept credit card payments, making the service more efficient for taxpayers, county officials said. Also, the office's collection operations will improve, alleviating postage and paper costs and reducing 10-minute calculations to a matter of seconds, said Conor Gleason, deputy tax collector.

A gradual transition from the old system to the new system is scheduled to begin next month.
