OLLI sets new classes

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will offer the following classes:

Child care training set

Child Care Aware of Northwest Arkansas is providing free training. Classes include:

Monday: "Anger: De-Frazzle the Frazzled" will examine participant's present state of being and think about how to make their lives enjoyable and organized. Class is 10 a.m.-noon at 614 E. Emma Ave., Suite 131 in Springdale.

Tuesday: "Stewards of Children" takes a comprehensive approach to educating adults and youth serving organizations to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Designed for parents and any organization that serves youth. Class is 6-8 p.m.at 614 E. Emma Ave., Suite 131 in Springdale.

Wednesday: "Introducing the 40 Developmental Assets and the Role of Parents as Asset Builders" institutes common sense, positive experiences, opportunities and personal qualities that young people need in order to avoid risk and thrive. Class is 10 a.m.-noon at 1200 W. Walnut St. in Rogers.

Seminar offers cancer topics

Hope Cancer Resources is offering a free survivor workshop to cancer survivors and caregivers from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.

The focus of the workshop is to teach survivors and their care givers about life after a cancer diagnosis. Topics include physical wellness, yoga, nutrition and relationships. The workshops are free.

Soldier ON hosts party

Soldier ON Service Dogs is flying into the 1940s with a Hero Tales Hangar Party from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Arkansas Air and Military Museum.

Swing into the night with top-notch tunes from The Singing Men of Arkansas followed by excellent eats by Catering Unlimited. Throw on 1940s threads or come as you are to dance the night away among vintage aircraft and honor some very special GI Joes. Tickets include two drinks, dinner, dancing and museum tours and are $75 per person or $130 per couple. Proceeds benefit Soldier ON Service Dogs. Sponsorships and table pricing are available.

Open House set April 30

In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter will be hosting an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. April 30 at the shelter at 14100 Vaughn Road in Highfill. The community is invited to experience the Children's Shelter first hand on a self-guided, interactive tour. This is a family-friendly event and those 18 and under are encouraged to attend. Learn about the Children's Shelter's many unique features and programs from staff and volunteers while exploring the state-of-the-art facility designed specifically to care for children suffering from the trauma of abandonment, abuse or neglect.

Cox offers grant awards

Cox Charities will award grants to area nonprofits in 2017 through its Community Investment Grant program. Cox Charities, which is funded by local employees, is accepting applications through May 1.

The grants are designed to assist 501(c)(3) organizations with outstanding programs that benefit the Northwest Arkansas and River Valley Cox Communications service areas. Funds are targeted toward nonprofit programs that focus on education, technology, social issues and the arts.

In the first two years of the Cox Charities program, Arkansas employees have supported 21 nonprofit organizations with $75,000.

Founded in 2015 through the annual contributions of nearly 200 employees, Cox Charities has pledged more than $220,000 in Arkansas. In 2017, Cox Arkansas employees have pledged to donate nearly $100,000 to continue fulfilling its mission of strengthening Cox communities through the support of programs that positively impact citizens.

WelcomeHealth hosts discussion

WelcomeHealth has announced a new event called Talk & Walk with a Doc at their clinic from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for six Saturdays beginning May 6 at their clinic, 1100 N. Woolsey Ave. in Fayetteville. Each session will begin with a 10 to 15 minute presentation on enlightening topics, followed by a question and answer session. After the talk there will be a 30-minute walk around Wilson Park.

The cost is $25 per Saturday, or $100 for all six, and includes a T-shirt.

Yoga Festivalset May 6-7

The 2017 Awaken Wellness and Yoga Festival will be held May 6 and 7 at Mount Sequoya Center, 150 N. Skyline Drive in Fayetteville. Events and workshops range from Chakra Balancing to juicing and essential oil workshops. Weekend passes are $100 and one-day passes are $55, both with lunch included, children get in free. The 100th person to register will receive a free weekend pass.

SoNA sets auditions

The Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, under the direction of Maestro Paul Haas, is announcing auditions for the upcoming 2017-18 season. Auditions will be held June 1 and 2 in Fayetteville for the following vacancies: Section violin I, associate principal second violin and section violin II, associate principal cello or section cello, clarinet III/bass clarinet, bassoon II and principal percussion.

Dickson slide set in August

Soldier ON Service Dogs, working with local producer UB Productions, will once again bring the Dickson Street Slide to Fayetteville from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 27. Tickets are now on sale to slip down the 1,000 foot water slide, spanning Dickson Street from Collier's Drug Store to the Walton Arts Center and check out the Vendor Village and Splashdown KidZone at the WAC parking lot.

Early bird pricing is $25 for Triple Sliders and $40 for unlimited sliders. Group tickets are also available.

Bentonville is Tree City

The Arbor Day Foundation has named the Bentonville a 2016 Tree City USA in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management for the 19th consecutive year.

The city achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: Having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

Cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits enjoyed by Tree City USA communities, the release states.
