Law enforcement to crack down on ‘distracted driving’

FAYETTEVILLE — Police plan to focus on distracted drivers from now until May 5, according to a news release.

Police and Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies are watching specifically for distracted drivers, including those texting while driving, said Sgt. Craig Stout, police spokesman.

The Police Department plans to post on social media the specific times and locations where officers will be, according to the release. Officers will use marked and unmarked vehicles.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month. Police want to bring awareness to the problem of distracted driving and reduce the number of accidents, according to the release.

No specific numbers were immediately available for accidents caused by distracted drivers or citations issued specifically for distracted driving, Stout said.

Traffic collisions rose nearly 16 percent from 2014 to 2015 in town, according to an annual traffic report on the Police Department’s website. The numbers are the most recent available.
