Travs falter in extra innings

CARDINALS 8, TRAVELERS 7 (10)

Bruce Caldwell hit a walk-off single with two outs in the 10th inning as the Springfield Cardinals topped the Arkansas Travelers 8-7 on Friday night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

Oscar Mercado scored the game-winning run after he led off the inning with a single, stole second base, then went to third on a groundout.

The Cardinals scored a run in the eighth inning to make it 7-2 before Arkansas answered with five in the top of the ninth to tie the game.

Marcus Littlewood led off the inning with a double for the Travelers. He moved to third on Kyle Petty's walk after Joey Wong reached on an error. Nelson Ward's two-run single to right-center field scored Littlewood and Wong to make it 7-4. Petty scored on a fielder's choice before Jay Baum scored on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to a run. Chuck Taylor lined a one-out single to score Ian Miller with the tying run, but Kyle Waldrop flied out and Ryan Casteel struck out to end the threat.

Springfield starter Matt Pearce allowed 2 runs and 4 hits over 6 innings. He also struck out three and walked one.

Pedro Echemendia (1-0) got the victory in relief, while Brett Ash (1-2) took the loss after allowing the winning run on two hits in the bottom of the 10th. Arkansas starter Andrew Moore pitched 6 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 unearned runs, while striking out 3.

Miller led the Travelers with three hits and scored twice. Taylor added two hits, including a double, while Littlewood scored two runs.

Eliezer Alvarez hit a home run, doubled and singled, scoring two runs for the Cardinals. Mercado had a home run and singled to go with four RBI and two runs scored.
