Restaurant month

Little Rock Restaurant Month, a project of the Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau to promote the city's local restaurants and neighborhoods, gets underway today.

Each week through the end of August, the promotion will focus on a Little Rock district and participating neighborhood restaurants will offer breakfast, lunch and/or dinner discounts.

• Through Sunday: Downtown, east of Woodrow Street, north of Roosevelt Road, includes River Market District, Main Street Creative Corridor, South Main and East Village neighborhoods.

• Aug. 7-13: West, west of Interstate 430, north of Lawson Road.

• Aug. 14-20: Midtown, Woodrow Street west to I-430 and north of Colonel Glenn and Roosevelt roads, includes Riverdale, Heights, Hillcrest and the North University corridor

• Aug. 21-27: Airport and Southwest, east of Shall Avenue and south of Colonel Glenn, Roosevelt and Lawson roads.

• Aug. 28-Sept. 2: River Market's Ottenheimer Market Hall.

Railroad retrospective

Michael Hibblen, news director at Little Rock public radio station KUAR-FM, 89.1, will discuss his book, Rock Island Railroad in Arkansas. Hibblen's book is a collection of photographs of the railroad that provided passenger and freight services in Arkansas for nearly 80 years, for the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies' monthly "Legacies & Lunch" program, noon Wednesday in the Darragh Center, Central Arkansas Library System Main Library, 100 Rock St., Little Rock. Admission is free; provide your own sack lunch and the Butler Center will provide drinks and dessert. The Arkansas Humanities Council is a partial sponsor. The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra is inaugurating a membership program. Beginning today, for $9 per month ($18 per couple or pair), members can attend an unlimited number of subscription concerts for any of the orchestra's series -- Masterworks, Pops Live!, River Rhapsodies and Intimate Neighborhood Concerts -- at no additional cost.

Members will also receive advance notice of special events and promotions and can choose best-available seats in selected sections online in advance or at the box office two hours before the "downbeat."

The Arkansas Symphony is also adding a not-on-any-series pops concert, "The Magical Music of Harry Potter," 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7 and 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at Robinson Center Performance Hall, 426 W. Markham St. at Broadway, Little Rock. Philip Mann will conduct music by John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat from all eight Harry Potter films. Tickets -- $15-$65, $10 for students and active duty military, free for K-12 students to the Sunday matinee with paying adult -- go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 24.
