Old names make news

Look who's back in the news. Just mentioning a couple of their names should be enough to make Gentle Reader either smile with amusement or shudder with dread, depending on the order in which one encounters them in Arkansas' Newspaper of record and comedy.

Let's begin on a light note with Edwin Edwards, that lovable scoundrel. Much like Arkansas' Bill Clinton, he's harmless enough so long as he's kept away from exercising any real power over the rest of us. He just celebrated his 90th birthday, long may he live in good health. For the record, he may be a convicted felon with a wife about 50 years his junior and by now and a 4-year-old son. But 'tis human to err and divine to forgive. Hundreds of his fans paid $250 each to attend the gala birthday party. Life is wonderful if only one can bear it. So laissez les bon temps roulez!

On the other sinister hand there's David (Son of Sam) Berkowitz, who also made the front page of the Democrat-Gazette the other day. Interviewed by CBS News while serving a life sentence, he confessed he'd "surrendered to . . . very dark forces" when he killed six people and wounded seven in his crime spree. The only consolation We the (law-abiding) People can draw from his bloody story is that he was caught and put away behind bars, where he may never be able to harm anyone else.
