City directors OK 60 police vehicles

The Little Rock Board of Directors on Tuesday approved funding for 60 police vehicles.

The purchase would be for 60 Ford Interceptor SUVs at a cost of $1,665,120, according to the resolution. The resolution said the agreement would be with Mark McLarty Ford of North Little Rock.

Earlier this year, City Manager Bruce Moore outlined a recommendation to spend about $10.5 million to update the Police Department's vehicle fleet over the next five years. Officials have said that the plan would extend the lifespan of the vehicles.

The replacement plan was announced after the Little Rock Fraternal Order of Police drew attention to the condition of the city's police vehicles, said John Gilchrist, president of the police union.

"I think we put the fire under them a couple of years ago," he said.
