Trolley trips in downtown Little Rock, North Little Rock will stay free this year

A promotion to boost ridership by offering free trolley trips will continue through the end of the year, the Rock Region Metro board voted Tuesday.

The program, which dropped the normal $1 fee, was initiated by the board in April as a way to encourage more people in downtown Little Rock and North Little Rock to board the streetcars.

The trolleys went into commission more than 12 years ago but had experienced a slump, which was attributed to several Saturday closures due to downtown construction and the closing of the Broadway bridge for six months.

In June, a total of 15,300 riders took advantage of the free fare, almost double the 7,901 riders during the same month last year.

The free fare comes as Rock Region begins a study looking at the future of the streetcar system, including possibly expanding it.
