WASHINGTON -- Declaring the U.S. will win "in the end," President Donald Trump vowed Monday night to keep American troops in Afghanistan despite his earlier inclination to withdraw. But he insisted the U.S. would not offer "a blank check" after 16 years of war, and he pointedly declined to say whether or when more troops might be sent.

It's been 16yrs! 16yrs of failed attempts to get Afghanees to stand on their own feet. Yet every time their 'army' faces the enemy, they run like small children leaving their US-taxpayer funded weapons and artillery for the enemy to claim. Too many Americans have died there. NOT ONE MORE. Enough; it is a lost cause. Every American sould be outraged when Trump's typical chest-thumping rhetoric about 'winning' puts Americans on the front lines, esp when he himself never served.

Anyone who believes this is a good decision is woefully ignorant of the history and sacrifice over the past 16yrs and should educate himself, rather than blindly deferring to militarists who continue to enrich military contractors and the bottomless pit that is the DoD budget. It dishonors everyone who has died and those willing to do so for WORTHY causes. This does not meet that test.

So, when Pres. Obama decides to stay in this fruitless war, trump was highly vocal and critical of the decision, saying that it was another terrible decision, the country lacked leadership, yada, yada, yada. Now, when he decides to continue with the Bush, then, the Obama policy, it's a different ballgame. For the sake of our troops, I hope he gets a win. But, honestly, is anyone surprised at this desperate attempt to deflect our attention from his mountain of troubles?

"Trump said his "original instinct was to pull out," Gee, who knew it could be so complicated? Who knew healthcare was so complicated? Ignorance is bliss, right?

*
"Still, he insisted that "in the end, we will win." Define "win". What is the exact goal and exit strategy? It is clear Rand Paul is right with "the mission in Afghanistan "has lost its purpose."
*
"The Pentagon has argued the U.S. must stay engaged to ensure terrorists can't again use the territory to threaten America." Sounds like we plan to be forever in The Graveyard of Empires.
*
Oh, well. Guess we should just be happy his half-baked plan to hand our military responsibility and tens of billions of dollars over to Betsy DeVos's corrupt Blackwater brother didn't come to fruition.

It's a diversionary tactic to take attention away from his real problems with the Russian investigation and his admissions that he is a closet Nazi, KKK sympathizer and a supporter of white supremacists.
...
It's a war we never had to fight, don't need to fight, and will never need to fight. We're not at war in Pakistan, but were able to find Bin Laden and terminate him in Pakistan. It may be a haven for terrorists, but that's a Fake Excuse for continuing a war against the Taliban. They were there before W declared a fake war, and will be there after our mentally ill prez is removed from office or his undefined conditional reasons for war have evaporated, whichever occurs first.

This President is such a whiny little B&^%&%%. Had to keep saying, "I was left with a mess" ..."if the other Presidents would have done their job..."
You got handed the same problems the previous President had but you got an almost fully employed robust economy. So actually Kane got it good! And to the latter, you have just done the exact same thing BO did!!!! Hello!!! So how is it now different? To save typing, I'll just hope I don't here the talking points # of troops, not telegraphing etc, you know, the points that are easily debunked.
To my friends who think we should be out of Afghanistan. I too was one of them. An argent supporter of leaving. And still on the fence but falling the other way. You see, there is nothing to win. Kanye lied last night about that. As probably BO did as well. We are there for one purpose, to hold a piece of land next to the most dangerous country in the world (Russia a close second), Pakistan. Religious nuts with many nuclear bombs, which could easily get in the hands of other religious crazies. This is a South Korea deal. We will be there forever. As much as I hate to say it.
Everyday this President shows himself to be a complete fraud.

I suggest the great negotiator set down with Taliban, warlords & official govt top corrupt ILKS & say here is 5 billion dollars, go in this dark room and the survivor who emerges gets the $$. Others, well it won't be pretty.

The govt forces are like most Iraq forces, turn tail & run. Feel sorry for the women & the brave Afghanistan people, but USA lives are too valuable for a person like DT to be able to talk crazy.

Sounds like President Trump is open-minded and listens to his military experts. Nice. Very nice.
.
So glad we no longer have a Commander-In-Chief that telegraphs plays to the enemy or places politics ahead of national interests. Thank Gawd for President Donald J Trump!

"Trump also said the U.S. "can no longer be silent" about terrorist havens in Pakistan.

He said Pakistan often gives sanctuary to "agents of chaos, violence and terror," and that the Taliban and other groups there pose a threat to the region and beyond."
*
Seems rather odd that such a haven for terrorists would have been left off the list of seven Muslim nations which he banned. Quite odd.
*
Of course, it was odd that he left off nearly all of the nations from which the 9/11 terrorists came.
