Kemp to lead engineering at ASU

Brandon Kemp has been named interim associate dean of the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Technology at Arkansas State University.

In this role, Kemp will lead the engineering programs at the Jonesboro campus for this academic year, Provost Lynita Cooksey said in an announcement issued by ASU.

The university is trying to help the northeast Arkansas economy by preparing more engineering graduates for the workplace.

Kemp's nine-month faculty salary is $101,502. As interim associate dean, Kemp will receive a $20,000 stipend through May 15. His total salary for nine months will be $121,502.

He has been an associate professor of electrical engineering and the Verbeth and Henry Ezra Coe professor of engineering. He earned his bachelor's degree in engineering from ASU in 1997, and he was named the university's most outstanding graduate in electrical engineering. He earned a master's degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"As a product of our university and one of our leading researchers in engineering, Brandon brings an understanding of both our academic strengths and the role [ASU] plays in our regional engineering economy," Cooksey said in a news release.

Kemp, 42, has received several professional awards, including being named an Arkansas Research Alliance Fellow in 2015, a National Science Foundation CAREER award winner in 2012, and a member of the Arkansas Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research at the Center for Advanced Surface Engineering.

"Dr. Kemp brings a passion and heartfelt desire to move Engineering forward now and into the future," Tim Burcham, dean of the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Technology, said in an email to the university's faculty and staff. "Dr. Kemp's love for Arkansas State University, his impeccable engineering credentials, and extensive industry work experience provide him all the tools necessary to provide effective leadership for our Engineering programs."
