LOUD AND PROUD

43 Clinton School students get acquainted at reception

There was not a shy one to be found at a reception for the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service class of 2019. The affair, which also included members of the nonprofit sector, Clinton School grads and other dignitaries, was held Aug. 17 at Trapnall Hall.

The foyer and flanking great rooms were packed and loud with conversation as the students introduced themselves to one another and found common ground. There are 43 students in the 2019 class.

A particularly proud point for Clinton School dean Skip Rutherford: the student government presidents from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock entered the Clinton School this year. Connor Flocks graduated from the UA, and Connor Donovan graduated from UALR.

Others have volunteered with The Peace Corps, AmeriCorps and Teach for America, while some in the ranks come armed with experience in the Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard.

"We continue to attract individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and interests, but with a common purpose to uplift others," Rutherford said.

Since opening its doors in 2004, the school has attracted students from more than 40 countries and 200 universities. The Clinton School is the nation's first to offer a master's of public service degree. Six countries and 13 states are represented in the class of 2019.

Classes began Monday.
