Habitat for Humanity of Washing County supporters helped nail support for the nonprofit organization's Women Build initiative at the third annual Heels and Hammers benefit Aug. 11 at Sassafras Springs Vineyard in Springdale.

Women Build offers women from all backgrounds an opportunity to learn new skills while building Habitat for Humanity homes. The program also draws attention to the fact the majority of Habitat for Humanity homeowners are single moms -- 75 percent nationally and 90 percent in Washington County.

The cost of building a Habitat home is approximately $80,000. A partner family puts in hundreds of hours helping build the home, then purchases it at cost from the nonprofit organization by repaying a no-interest mortgage in monthly payments not more than 30 percent of their income. Those payments go back to supporting Habitat for Humanity's mission.

Those hammering support for Habitat included Blake Woolsey, Eileen Bowles Jennings, Lindsley and Stephen Smith, Jamie Davis, Anita Cowan, Karen Gray, Morgan Stubbs, Allison and Jeff Pederson and Sarah Pine.
