UAPB event to host Fresh Prince's Ali

Actress, singer and activist Tatyana Ali will speak at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff's annual Lyceum event.

Ali, who is best known for her role as Ashley Banks on the television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, will be the event's keynote speaker. The event -- free and open to the public -- starts at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at the John McLinn Ross auditorium of the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts building.

The Harvard University graduate encourages audiences to pursue their goals and to use education to grow, according to a news release. Ali, who is a five-time NAACP Image Award winner, also motivates members of her audiences to get involved in civics and to be true to themselves, the news release states.

Doctor's UAMS gift to fund scholarships

A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences doctor has donated to the academic medical center to start two scholarships.

Dr. C. Lowry Barnes -- the Dr. Carl L. Nelson Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery -- gave UAMS $37,500, which the academic medical center matched to $75,000, according to a news release.

The funds are for the Blackwell-Barnes College of Medicine and the Marty Bushmiaer Orthopaedic Nursing scholarships, which honors Barnes' mentor, Dr. Banks Blackwell and his longtime nurse, Bushmiaer, UAMS said in a news release.

The College of Medicine scholarship will help students in that area and will give preference to those from southeast Arkansas who are interested in orthopaedics. Barnes graduated from the UAMS College of Medicine in 1986 and went on to finish an internship and residency there with the help of Blackwell, the news release states.

The other scholarship is for orthopaedic nurses who are pursuing an advanced degree from the UAMS College of Nursing. Bushmiaer started working with Barnes in 1994 when she was attaining an advanced degree at UAMS, the news release said.
