Great Value Tropickles
Great Value Tropickles

WHAT: Great Value Tropickles

STATS: A serving (3/4 of a spear) contains 25 calories and zero fat, 6 carbohydrate, zero fiber, 6 sugar and zero protein grams. Sold at Wal-Mart stores, we found them at the Neighborhood Market, 2510 Cantrell Road, Little Rock.

THE SKINNY: Fruit-punch flavored pickles?

Who came up with this idea? Not Wal-Mart. Though they've been selling Great Value brand Tropickles, the concept has been around for some time. ("Kool-Aid pickles," said a co-worker from Mississippi with familiarity when I set out a jar for colleagues to sample.)

Sweet pickle fans might savor the spears that get their flavor and color from ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, vinegar, salt and Red 40.

But I wasn't a fan. I hypothesized that the serving size is 3/4 of a spear because no one could bear to finish a whole one.

"Dill and Hawaiian Punch -- two flavors that were never meant to mix," remarked one co-worker.

Said another, "I kind of feel like I got fruit punch-ed in the mouth."
