KICKING UP A GOOD TIME

Sweethearts and their dads celebrate Heart Association

Sweethearts and their fathers two-stepped around a parking lot at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church on Nov. 17. The lot was the dance floor for the American Heart Association's Sweetheart Father Daughter Barbecue.

After working up an appetite learning the two-step and Cotton-Eyed Joe, the young women and their dads went inside to enjoy a barbecue dinner from Corky's. A program included remarks by Charles Johnson and his daughter Samantha, who was born with a heart defect and had a heart transplant when she was 6 weeks old. Also speaking was Dr. Kenneth Knecht, father of one of the Sweethearts and Samantha's doctor, who spoke about treating children with congenital heart defects.

The Central Arkansas Sweethearts will be presented March 10 at the Heart Ball held at the Statehouse Convention Center. The sophomore girls spend a year volunteering, learning about heart health along with several social activities.
