SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Tayler Persons hit a three-pointer from the left wing with 1.7 seconds remaining and Ball State shocked No. 9 Notre Dame 80-77 on Tuesday night at Purcell Pavilion.
Persons scored 24 points, Tahjai Teague added 13 points and Sean Sellers had 11 points as Ball State knocked off a nationally ranked opponent for the first time since downing No. 4 UCLA 91-73 more than 16 years ago.
Notre Dame (7-2) lost a nonconference home game for the first time since falling to North Dakota State four years ago.
The Cardinals (5-4) led 67-58 with 6:45 to go, but the Irish charged all the way back to a 77-77 tie on Matt Farrell's three-pointer with 20 seconds to go.
Persons then drained his three-pointer off the dribble for the victory.
Ball State had lost each of nine previous meetings to its in-state rival, the most recent being almost 32 years ago by a 119-78 count. The closest the Cardinals had come against the Irish was 14 points, and Notre Dame's average margin of victory was 29 points.
Bonzie Colson had 26 points for the Irish. Farrell added 14 points and eight assists, while Martinas Geben finished with 12 points.
In other men’s top 25 games, freshman Marvin Bagley III had 21 pionts and 11 rebounds as No. 1 Duke scored 71 points in the first half of its 124-67 rout of St. Francis (Pa.). Marques Bolden had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Wendell Carter Jr. had 15 points, and Gary Trent Jr. and Grayson Allen both finished with 14 points for the Blue Devils (11-0). PHOENIX — Deandre Ayton had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Arizona held on to beat No. 7 Texas A&M.
Arizona (6-3) picked up a big victory against UNLV on Saturday and notched an even bigger one in front of a pro-Wildcats crowd that made Talking Stick Arena feel like McKale Center west.
It wasn’t easy.
Texas A&M (7-1) pulled within 63-62 on Tyler Davis’ jump-hook with 17 seconds left. Brandon Randolph twice hit 1 of 2 free throws, sandwiched around a travel by Davis, and Duane Wilson was fouled on a three-point attempt with two seconds left. He made two after missing the first attempt, and Dylan Smith made two at the other end to put Arizona up 67-64.
Texas A&M’s Robert Williams missed badly on a long three-pointer to send the Aggies to their first defeat.
Davis led the Aggies with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Arizona dropped out of the AP top 25 last week from No. 2 after a disastrous 0-3 trip to the Bahamas, becoming the first team since Louisville in 1986 to fall from No. 2 to unranked.
The Wildcats bounced back to rout Long Beach State at home, though Coach Sean Miller went on a long post-game rant about his team’s defensive effort. Arizona had more defensive problems in the first half at UNLV, but rallied to beat the Runnin’ Rebels 91-88 in overtime.
The Wildcats had some shaky defensive moments and a rash of turnovers early Tuesday but turned up the defensive pressure, holding the Aggies to 1-for-11 shooting during a 13-2 run to take a seven-point lead.
Texas A&M rallied as the Wildcats kept passing the ball to them on sloppy turnovers and took a 31-29 lead at halftime despite Williams going scoreless and taking just one shot.
MISSOURI 70, MIAMI (OHIO) 51
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Kevin Puryear scored a season-high 20 points and Jordan Barnett tied a career high with 5 three-pointers, finishing with 15 points and 8 rebounds, as Missouri ran past Miami (Ohio).
The Tigers (7-2) struggled at the start but warmed up behind the three-point line. Missouri shot 53 percent from the floor, including 10-of-23 shooting behind the three-point line.
Kassius Robertson added 17 pionts, and Jeremiah Tilmon finished with 12 for Missouri.
The Tigers limited Miami to 32 percent shooting from the floor, including 5 of 24 from the three-point line. The Missouri defense swarmed the RedHawks in the first half, holding them to 24 points on 28 percent shooting.
GEORGIA 87, WINTHROP 82
ATHENS, Ga. -- Yante Maten had 25 points and 11 rebounds to help Georgia hold off Winthrop.
Turtle Jackson was one of five Bulldogs (7-1) to score at least 10 points with 14 points. Mike Edwards added 11 points, and Rayshaun Hammonds and Derek Ogbeide 10 apiece.
Xavier Cooks led Winthrop (5-4) with 31 points. The Eagles missed six of their first seven three-pointers, but returned to form over the last 23 minutes, hitting 7 of 12 and overtaking the Bulldogs in the second half. Nych Smith added 12 points and Anders Broman chipped in with 11 points.
Georgia led 40-38 at halftime.
But Cooks dunked twice early in the second half, and Anders Broman nailed a three-pointer to put Winthrop ahead 47-44 with 16:26 to play. The Eagles' biggest lead came with 13:07 to play when Anders Broman hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc to make it 58-52.
Georgia recaptured the lead with 6:20 to play when Juwan Parker hit a short jumper to make it 66-65. But it was not until Maten hit a hook shot with 1:24 remaining that Georgia took the lead for good. Jackson followed that with a running jumper high off the glass to make it 83-79 with 49 seconds to play.
Georgia made 4 of 6 free throws in the last 28 seconds to protect its lead.

Fatodd Lewis scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds as Tennessee-Martin earned just its second victory of the season Tuesday night over Arkansas State at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro.
Lewis was 9 of 12 from the floor for Tennessee-Martin (2-7), which had lost five consecutive before beating North Carolina Central 74-57. Matthew Butler added 20 points, Parrish Hewitt had 17 and Terrence Parker chipped in 12 for the Skyhawks.
Butler hit a three-pointer to give Tennessee-Martin the lead for good at 31-27 with 4:33 left in the first half. Arkansas State (2-6) stayed close until Lewis hit a jumper and followed with a three-pointer for a 62-52 lead midway through the second half. Deven Simms had a career-high 33 points to lead Arkansas State, which has lost four consecutive.

The Arkansas State University women (3-4) got a game-high 23 points from guard Jada Ford, which tied her season high, as the Red Wolves handed UTEP its first loss of the season Tuesday at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro. The Miners (5-1) led 35-24 with 4:34 left in the first half after a three-pointer by Roeshonda Patterson, but the Red Wolves used a 12-2 run over the next 3:30 to cut the lead to 37-36 with 1:05 remaining. A 7-0 UTEP run to end the half gave the Miners a 44-36 halftime lead. The lead grew to 46-37 nearly a minute into the third quarter before Arkansas State began to chip away. A three-pointer by Ford and a tip-in by Lauren Bradshaw cut the lead to 46-44 with 6:37 left in the third quarter. The Miners pushed the lead to six twice more in the quarter before a layup by Akasha Westbrook and consecutive three-pointers by Payton Tennison and Ford gave the Red Wolves a 54-53 lead with 2:28 left in the quarter.
UTEP retook the lead briefly on a layup by Patterson, but another three-pointer from Ford and three free throws from Westbrook gave ASU a 60-55 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Westbrook finished with 17 points for the Red Wolves. Tamara Seda led UTEP with 19 points, while Najala Howell added 17 and Patterson finished with 16.

Crystal Polk scored a game-high 16 points to lead five Tulsa players with 10 or more points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Golden Hurricane defeated the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa.
Alexis Gaulden scored 15 points for Tulsa (4-5), Morgan Brady and Erika Wakefield each had 12, and Tatyana Perez chipped in with 11.
UAPB (2-5) struggled from the floor, shooting 24 percent (12 of 50) and missing all 11 three-point attempts. The Golden Lions were outscored 24-14 in the lane and 31-6 off turnovers, while the Golden Hurricane’s bench outscored the Golden Lions’ bench 44-14.
Faith Ohanta led UAPB with eight points.
