Lyon hires new coach

Lyon College announced Tuesday its hiring of Canadian Football League assistant coach Casey Creehan to be the Scots' third head football coach.

Creehan began his duties at Lyon College on Friday, after second-year Coach Kyle Phelps resigned Nov. 27.

The Scots finished 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Central States Football League during the 2017 season and will participate as an associate member of the Sooner Athletic Conference beginning in the 2018 season.

Creehan has been the Edmonton Eskimos defensive line coach for the past two seasons, and Edmonton reached the CFL Western Conference final before losing 32-28 to the Calgary Stampeders. Prior to the Eskimos, Creehan served in various defensive assistant roles with the Toronto Argonauts, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Calgary Stampeders.

During his 19 years of coaching, Creehan has coached in two Grey Cup National Championships, 12 CFL playoff games and the NCAA FCS (then I-AA) playoffs.

He was a member of the football team at Grove City (Pa.) College and was selected as a team captain during the 1998 season.

Creehan took his first coaching position as a defensive assistant at Lehigh (Pa.) University and helped coach the Mountain Hawks to a Patriot League Championship and a berth in the NCAA I-AA playoffs in 1998.
