Adding a 6.5 percent excise tax on the wholesale price of fuel and extending a 0.5 percent state sales tax for another 10 years would help raise nearly $8.4 billion over that period for highway and bridge maintenance as well as some capital projects across the state, the top official at the Arkansas Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

We're long overdue for a fuel tax increase. Our cars and trucks use less fuel, so the funds dwindle for road upkeep and improvement.

I live close enough to the MO border that I fill up wherever is cheaper and will continue to do so in the future.

I think if fuel taxes are going to be raised they should at least tax the fuel for heavy trucks at a higher rate than autos, as they do more damage to the roads than do passenger cars. At an equal percentage the average Arkansan is subsidizing the trucking industry. Since Republicans are in the majority and with their attitude of everyone paying their own way, this should be a cinch to pass.

Timber........since 18 wheelers only get about 6 mpg they are already are paying about 8 x the amount of tax per mile driven vs a Prius.

I agree with Timber, they should be taxed more and possibly have a dedicated lane on the interstates. However, it likely won't happen and besides they would just pass the extra cost on to the consumer and we do love our cheap imported goods.

I love paying taxes. From history, we once had a revolution over taxes.
