2 candidates file in special races

Seats in House, Senate sought

Breanne Davis of Russellville and Timmy Reid of Marshall filed Thursday to run in Feb. 13 special primary elections for two of three open legislative seats.

Davis is seeking the Republican nomination for the Senate District 13 seat, which became vacant with last month's death of Sen. Greg Standridge, R-Russellville. District 13 includes Newton and Pope counties. Davis is the first candidate to file for the seat.

Davis is a senior account executive for the global analytics firm SAS Institute and a member of the Russellville School Board.

Reid is vying for the GOP nomination for the House District 83 seat, which was held by Rep. David Branscum, R-Marshall. Branscum resigned last month to become the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development director in Arkansas. District 83 includes Newton and parts of Boone, Carroll, Pope and Searcy counties.

Reid, a general contractor and cattle farmer, is the second Republican candidate to file for House District 83. J. Donald Ragland of Marshall, who is a Searcy County justice of the peace, filed for the post Wednesday.

There is a third special election primary on Feb. 13 for the Senate District 29 seat, which became vacant last month when Sen. Eddie Joe Williams, R-Cabot, resigned to become President Donald Trump's federal representative to the Southern States Energy Board. Senate District 29 includes parts of Faulkner, Lonoke, Pulaski and White counties.

Ricky Hill of Cabot filed for the Senate District 29 seat Wednesday. He is executive vice president with the Bank of the Ozarks and a former Cabot School Board member.

The filing period for the seats started Wednesday and ends at noon next Wednesday. If special primary runoff elections are needed for any of the three seats, they will be held March 13. The special general election for the seats will be held May 22 -- the same day as the regular primary election.
