Ship takes shape

USS Little Rock Namesake Committee will hold a watch party, 9 a.m. Saturday at the Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Ave., Little Rock, to watch the live-stream broadcast of the U.S. Navy commissioning, in Buffalo, N.Y., of the new USS Little Rock. The ninth of 15 new Freedom-class littoral combat ships will be commissioned, alongside its namesake, decommissioned in 1976, now a museum ship at Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park. Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola and North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith will be among the approximately 30 Arkansans representing the state at the event. Christmas band concert

The Natural State Brass Band will perform seasonal selections, 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 4106 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock. The program includes Leroy Anderson's Bugler's Holiday; Rhapsody for Hanukkah, arranged by Stephen Bulla; Candlelight Carol by John Rutter; Nutcracker Sweet, arranged by Mark Freeh; Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed (arranged for brass band by band member David Laubach) and an audience sing-a-long.
