Woman, 61, in fatal fire ID'd

Mary Pounder, 61, died early Tuesday in a fire at her home in northern Crawford County, and her husband Albert, 76, was injured, according to Crawford County Sheriff Ron Brown.

Brown and fire officials said the couple's house on Mote Road off U.S. 71, about 5 miles north of Alma, was destroyed in the fire. The fire marshal's office of the Arkansas State Police has been asked to investigate the cause, which Brown said has not been determined.

Brown said the cause of Mary Pounder's death also has not been determined. Her body was sent to the state medical examiner's office for autopsy.

Officials said firefighters could hear shouting from inside the house when they arrived at the scene. Firefighters crawled a few feet into the house and pulled the unconscious Albert Pounder out. He had burns on 10 to 20 percent of his body and was sent to a hospital in Little Rock.

Mary Pounder's body was found later near where firefighters pulled her husband's body from the house.
