Suspect in murder of elderly woman in Arkansas will get 2nd exam

ASH FLAT -- A woman from northeast Arkansas who faces a murder charge in the death of an elderly woman is getting a second mental evaluation.

A judge granted the evaluation Tuesday in Sharp County Circuit Court for Jennifer Collins of Mammoth Spring after her attorney filed a motion contesting the first one.

Collins faces a second-degree murder charge in the May death of 92-year-old Jane Sandefur of Cherokee Village. Collins was originally charged May 12 with first-degree battery.

Sandefur died about a week after police found her covered in blood on the floor of her Cherokee Village home May 11. Authorities said they also found Collins, who appeared to be unconscious, lying next to Sandefur.

Cherokee Village Police Chief Rickey Crook said in an arrest affidavit filed in Sharp County Circuit Court that Sandefur had bite marks on her face, hand, arm, leg and breast.

Sandefur's son, Scott Sandefur, has said the victim was in the care of Collins at the time.

Defense attorney R.T. Starken said the psychologist in the first evaluation didn't fully test Collins' intelligence and competency and cited case law for those requirements.
