"Plastics are the big ugly space stealers in many kitchens," Clark says. Take a few minutes to pull them all out, ruthlessly review and toss the stained, lidless and flimsy ones.

"I go to some homes and they'll have several drawers filled with these things that are often too yucky to use but never get thrown away," she says. Plastics are recyclable in many cities (check the number on the bottom), and that can alleviate the guilt of discarding them.

"I personally use OXO Good Grips glass rectangular stackable storage containers," she says. "I also keep a few cheap Glad plastic containers for when I'm taking something that I won't bring home, or if I expect it to be disposable in some way."

Clark also recommends choosing glass containers rather than plastic because they are sturdy, can't leach organic chemicals like bisphenol A (better known as BPA) even in microwaves, and don't stain. She considers glass to be a good investment for the long term.

"Always go rectangular rather than round if room is an issue; round ones waste space in the corners," she advises. "Get sets that nest and/or stack into each other to save even more space."

She adds that Rubbermaid produces sets where one size lid fits various sizes of container.

"Finally, make it a point to edit them once a year since they seem to breed in dark cabinets," Clark says.
