DEPARTING CAMP DAVID

Reception honors retiring Ferncliff director David Gill

David Gill, who retired after 20 years as executive director of Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center, was honored for his service at an annual dinner held at the camp Feb. 3. His son, Joel Gill, has been selected to replace him.

Guests enjoyed wine and appetizers at a reception before the dinner. As they imbibed, they posed for pictures using an array of fun props and a life-size cardboard cutout of Gill. Attendees included board members, volunteers, former campers and camp counselors.

During Gill's turn as the Presbyterian camp's director, summer camp attendance grew from 400 to 1,370 campers, said Renee Dickins, one of many volunteers. Ferncliff campers include children affected by school violence and children in foster care. Gill also oversaw capital campaigns that created a welcome center, new cabins, a new dining hall and other needed structures. He assisted in the creation of a Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Center and the camp's Nature Preschool. Under his charge, the camp received awards for environmental sustainability.
