5K to draw attention to Stop the Violence

The MLK 5K Run/Walk has a new course this year and a new theme: "Race to Stop the Violence."

The 3.1-mile footrace will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the state Capitol (not the Big Dam Bridge, as in the past).

The 5K costs $25, and a kids mile is $10. Children 5 or younger run for free but must be registered. The event also has a "media mile" that members of the media can run for $20. Online registration is open until 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

Packet pickup is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Rock City Running, 10300 N. Rodney Parham Road. Race-day registration will be from 6 to 8 a.m. at the Capitol.

After the race awards at 9:30 a.m. at the Capitol, racers can travel to Dunbar Community Center, 1001 W. 16th St., where a Stop the Violence forum begins at 10.

Proceeds will benefit the Derek Olivier Research Institute at Arkansas Baptist College.
