First stirrings

Contrary to the conventional unwisdom, it's not death and taxes that are inevitable, not here in Arkansas, but a life-giving source: books! This year will bring the 14th annual Arkansas Literary Festival as well as the usual daffodils, wildflowers and a whole host of other seasonal brighteners. Now is the time of anticipation, and some of us can hardly wait till authors as well as flowers cover the state.

This year's crop of authors is to include Therese Anne Fowler (Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald) and Natalie Baszile (Queen Sugar). If these visitors don't have ties to this Wonder State, they do to the South in general. Arkansas' own Cara Brookins (Rise: How a House Built a Family) tells the story of the house her family built in Bryant. And not to be missed is the scheduled appearance of Kevin Delaney of Little Rock's great family attraction, the Museum of Discovery. And so forth and so enticingly on. Consider this editorial your invitation.

So happy book sales to the authors and happy reading to us all!
