Basketball: Wilson leads Greenland to district tourney title

CHARLESTON -- Greenland sophomore guard Fiona Wilson made the most of her start Thursday night at the Tiger Center.

Wilson, who usually comes off the bench, scored a game-high 24 points to lead the way for Greenland in a 63-52 victory against Charleston in the 3A-1 West district tournament championship game.

"Fiona is usually the one to come off the bench, but we were down one player today," Greenland coach Alan Barton said. "She got the chance to be the starter and played very well for us."

Wilson, filling in for senior starter Reagan Renfrow who didn't make the trip, got the offense going with a team-high 12 points in the first half.

Greenland (22-5) was able to pull away with a strong final quarter, but Charleston (16-8) didn't make it easy.

The Lady Tigers tied the game at 36-36 with 2:15 left in the third quarter with a basket from senior guard Abbey Jones. Greenland then was able to outscore Charleston 27-14 after that mark to take back a big lead.

"Once we tied it, they had a nice run to kind of take control of the game," Charleston coach Jason Rucker said. "But I thought it was a back-and-forth battle. They are a championship program."

Senior guard Mckayla Redmond helped close out the game scoring eight of her 13 points in the final quarter from the the free-throw line for the Lady Pirates.

Greenland shot 21 for 41 from the field in the game often finding shots in the paint for high-percentage looks from Wilson and senior post Saphire Osburn, who scored 15 points.

"I thought sometimes we took the easy way taking some threes when they were coming back on us," Barton said. "But we came back and talked about making shots we knew we could make."

Sophomore guard Allie Green scored a team-high 22 points for Charleston. Green made five first-half 3-point baskets and scored a team-high five fourth-quarter points for the Lady Tigers.

Sophomore guard Emma Long added 16 points for the Lady Tigers.

Charleston was able to cut the Greenland lead to 28-25 at the break with a strong second quarter from Green.

Boys

Charleston 51, Cedarville 38

Charleston senior guard Brandon Fenner scored a game-high 33 points and added four more 3-point baskets to his state record Thursday night in the 3A-1 West district tournament championship game.

Fenner, who broke the state's 3-point shooting career record earlier this week, started the game with a 3-point basket and heated up after that to lead Charleston past Cedarville.

The Tigers held just an 11-7 lead and a 24-11 lead at halftime. But Fenner hit two more 3-point baskets in the third quarter and finished with a team-high 19 second-half points.

Cedarville was able to cut the lead to 43-37 late in the fourth quarter, but Charleston (15-9) then closed out the game on a 8-1 run to help extend its lead.

Senior guard Justin Shelly scored a team-high 17 points for Cedarville (5-19).

Girls

Elkins 57, Cedarville 38

Elkins got the offense going early and often to pull away against Cedarville.

Kenadie Kestner scored a game-high 21 points, including nine in the first quarter to help build a 22-8 lead.

Cedarville (10-14) was led by Patience Wise's team-high 18 points.

Elkins (17-11) was able to push its lead out to 37-17 at the break and to 47-26 heading into the final quarter.

Boys

Elkins 53, Greenland 44

Elkins held just a 20-17 lead at the break, but a strong quarter final quarter was able put the game well out of reach late.

Greenland was down 33-26 after three quarters, but Elkins outscored Greenland 20-12 in the final quarter to secure the victory in the third-place game in the 3A-1 West district tournament.

Elkins (11-12) was led by Chad Graham having a team-high 15 points, while Karsten Shackelford added 14 points.

Zac Wolfe scored a game-high 19 points for Greenland (3-19)
