Longtime Texarkana mayor Ferguson dies

TEXARKANA -- Bobby Ferguson, a former, long-serving mayor of Texarkana, died Tuesday. He was 84.

His legacies included obtaining a substantial amount of grant money for the city. He traveled by car to Washington, D.C., many times and was on a first-name basis with the area's congressional representatives.

Ferguson was elected to the Texarkana Board of Directors in 1968 and served through 1974. He served as mayor from 1974 to 1992.

Ferguson also served on the Texarkana School District board for eight months in an appointed position in the mid-1990s.

In 2005, then-Gov. Mike Huckabee appointed Ferguson as Miller County District 3 justice of the peace for a two-year term after the death of Dan Fulce.

In 2006, Ferguson made an unsuccessful bid for the mayor's seat against incumbent Horace Shipp.
